A new pedagogical framework designed to help students Learn, Apply, and Build their interpersonal skills

The second edition introduces a new LAB pedagogical framework in the text and courseware, which is based on learning science and Bloom’s Taxonomy. With this new framework, It’s Interpersonal can act as an “IPC lab,” giving students space and guidance to Learn, Apply, and Build their IPC skills.

 
 

Learn

Students learn key concepts with features aimed at helping them understand, remember, and recall information from each chapter:

  • Brief Chapter Outlines appear at the start of each chapter, previewing the terms and concepts in the reading ahead.

     

  • Marginal Key Terms recap important information as students read.

     

  • Check Your Understanding Questions at the end of each section in the ebook help students remember and recall key concepts and ideas.

Apply

Students apply and identify key IPC concepts in a wide range of interpersonal communication situations and contexts, moving from fictional scenarios in popular media to other students’ real experiences, then finally to their own lives.

  • Chapter Opening Vignettes connect the theme of the chapter with a real-life scenario, demonstrating how skillful IPC can be used to create and enhance healthy relationships.

     

  • IPC in the Media Features use brief scenes from popular TV shows, movies, and YouTube videos illustrate important concepts, with reflection questions that ask students to recognize concepts and analyze the characters’ communication choices.

     

  • Student to Student Narratives, narratives inspired by the author’s students, invite readers to relate to and interpret the communication behaviors of other students.

     

  • Reflect! Prompts ask students to connect the chapter concepts directly to their own lives.

Build

Students bring all of the course concepts directly to their own lives with features that help them analyze, evaluate, and build their IPC skills in the context of their interpersonal relationships.

  • Try It! Prompts at the end of each section ask students to try using one IPC skill or technique from the chapter in their own lives.

     

  • Assessing Your IPC Exercises are now interactive surveys in the ebook, helping students evaluate areas of strength and areas for growth.

     

  • Building Your IPC Skills Exercises accompany every chapter and are designed to help students improve their interpersonal communication skills with their own families, friends, colleagues, classmates, and others. They are available as downloadable and editable Word document worksheets.
