Poets on Poetry — Joy Harjo

 

Join us for a conversation between poet Joy Harjo and educator Melissa Alter Smith on the art and craft of poetry and its intersection with today’s world.

Joy Harjo is a member of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation. She is the author of nine poetry collections and one previous memoir, Crazy Brave. Named Poet Laureate of the United States in 2019, she lives in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where she is a Tulsa Artist Fellow.

Melissa Alter Smith teaches at Lake Norman Charter High School in North Carolina and was the 2017 District Teacher of the Year. She is an AP® Reader, the creator of the #TeachLivingPoets hashtag and https://teachlivingpoets.com, and the co-author of Teach Living Poets (2021). A frequent presenter, she has facilitated conversations with poets on behalf of the National Council of Teachers of English for several years.
