“Teaching American government in an evolving political environment”

Hosted by Candis Watts Smith and Amber Boydstun on October 22nd, 2025

Today’s rapidly changing political climate has influenced not just students’ perception and understanding of American government, but also the way instructors teach and talk about even the most foundational aspects of the course. Join Candis Watts Smith (Duke University) and Amber Boydstun (University of California Davis), who have joined the author team of American Politics Today for the forthcoming Ninth Edition, for a discussion on teaching American government in a time when politics is anything but usual. The conversation will consider what it means to teach in the time of the 24-hour news cycle and how to navigate potentially contentious or sensitive topics, while also ensuring students are leaving with a firm grasp not just on the key concepts of the course, but with an understanding of how the U.S. government influences their lives and the issues they care most about.

You can RSVP below to join us live or to receive a recording of the webinar. We will reserve time at the end of the session for Q&A.
