“Why it's more important for students to trust us than like us: A teaching workshop with Stephen Chew”

Hosted by Stephen Chew on March 20th, 2025

The Cognitive Challenges Framework (Chew & Cerbin, 2021) describes nine interacting cognitive challenges that teachers and students must negotiate for students to learn effectively. One challenge that is often overlooked is student fear and mistrust.

In this virtual workshop, we will explore the importance of student trust in the teacher: what constitutes student trust, what its impact on student behavior is, and how to build it. We will also look at what happens when trust is lost or undermined by teacher behaviors.
