Why is sociology sometimes seen as controversial—and what makes it such a powerful way to understand controversy itself? In this virtual talk, renowned author Dalton Conley shows how a sociological lens can be applied to some of today’s biggest hot-button issues, including social media, universal basic income, and political polarization. Together, we’ll explore how sociology helps us move beyond hot takes and talking past one another to ask better questions, interpret data, and have more productive conversations in and beyond the classroom. Dalton will also share how building core sociological skills—critical thinking, data literacy, and a strong methodological toolkit—prepares students for a labor market increasingly shaped by AI and complex social challenges.
