Artificial intelligence isn’t just changing what we say. It’s changing how we say it, who we say it to, and even why we communicate. From chatbots that simulate empathy to AI tools that filter, translate, and predict our messages, technology now mediates nearly every interpersonal exchange.
In this engaging presentation, Tiffany Petricini (Penn State Erie, Behrend Campus) explores AI-Mediated Communication (AI-MC) as the newest frontier in interpersonal communication, where relationships are co-shaped by algorithms. Participants will examine how AI influences presence, intimacy, trust, identity, and emotional labor, while also considering the ethical challenges and opportunities that come with algorithmic mediation. The session closes with practical strategies for using AI tools responsibly and authentically to enhance (not replace) our human connections.
