“Problem or Panacea? The Social Construction of Artificial Intelligence and the Legacy of Technology Panics”

Hosted by Joel Best and Brian Monahan (November 21st, 2025)

Joel Best and Brian Monahan’s Social Problems presents a constructionist approach to social problems. This approach offers a way of thinking about any social problem that becomes a focus for public concern. This workshop examines a current example: the complex array of claims—both positive and negative—about artificial intelligence. The focus will be on how the framework advanced in Social Problems can help us assess the strange mix of utopian and cataclysmic forecasts about AI’s future impact on society.
